Trip Details

We begin our day at the charming market town of Southwell, the “jewel in Nottinghamshire’s crown”, with time to explore the magnificent Minster, outdoor market and specialist shops. This afternoon we walk up the paupers’ path towards The Workhouse and imagine how the Victorian poor might have felt as they sought refuge here. This austere building, the most complete workhouse in existence, was built in 1824 as a place of last resort for the destitute. Explore the segregated work yards, day rooms, dormitories, master’s quarters, cellars and in the vegetable garden find out what the 19th century paupers might have eaten. (The cellar, first and second floors are only accessible by stairs) Early bookings advisable.
Price includes entrance into The Workhouse.
